Black Hole Sun — A Soundgarden Cover by Brice Frillici

I recorded "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden as part of my ongoing work with other people's songs. The project is called Song Belongs To Room.

Some songs seem almost impossible to cover because the original performance has become inseparable from the composition. "Black Hole Sun" is one of them. Chris Cornell's voice does not merely sit on top of the song. It bends the entire thing around itself. The strange intervals, the weight of the melody, the psychedelic dread, and that enormous vocal performance have been in the culture for more than thirty years.

If you cover it, it will be hard to be taken seriously. Maybe mine is a curious enough version to get a smile.

Like millions of other fans, this is one of my top favorite songs in the world, so I wanted to pay respects as well as add just a little bit of variation. For this song, I tried to honor the original recording as closely as possible. Throughout my project, I go in both directions and sometimes create wild new versions of the songs. Sometimes middle of the road, similar but different, etc. With over 50 songs covered, one can see the diversity of traversity.

This song is beautiful and deeply strange.

My version is now available on Spotify.
